All four Alisa Keys are in the headlines again.
All four of them are parents, and they’re all being treated like the centre of attention.
In the early days of the birth of their daughter, the Keys were worried that the new baby might be too big.
The hospital didn’t know what to make of the little girl, but they were worried too, and were worried about her weight.
But the twins are growing up.
They’re going to be normal kids.
The doctors aren’t concerned, and the doctors are happy to be part of the equation.
But not everyone is.
And for some parents, they’re feeling like they’re being treated with kid gloves.
Reporter: It’s the latest in a long line of stories about how health and social care providers have struggled to deal with the growing demand for early births.
They need to be more aware of what’s happening with our parents and our children, said Dr Mark Kallman.
The problem with the hospital is, is it’s not really doing a good job of managing the demand, said Mr Kallmann.
What they need to do is look at the medical literature on what is happening with these babies, and take a long look at what the best approach is, and what’s been done in the past, said Mark Kallson.
In some ways, it’s a bit like when we have an issue in the healthcare system, like we’ve got an Ebola outbreak, and we’ve done everything in our power to control that, said Tim Cairns.
Tim Cairs, professor emeritus, University of Queensland.
That’s the thing, Tim, it could be, you know, I’m going to make a huge difference to this baby’s life, and that baby is going to benefit, but if I do everything possible to try to make that child as healthy as possible, I don’t want them to be ill.
And that’s not the way we’re trying to do it, said Professor Cairs.
The other big issue is that we’re putting too much emphasis on how much weight we’re taking into account, he said.
I think that’s the one thing that is a little bit problematic, is we’re looking at a child and saying, “Oh, you weigh like this, so you should get that weight down to a level where you’re not going to get pregnant,” he said, adding that’s a huge mistake.
Dr Mark Cairs is the senior lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Melbourne.
Thats the kind of thing that happens all the time.
It’s all about how much they weigh, he says.
The way they’re thinking about it, is if they are at a weight of around 350 grams, they are going to have a good chance of getting pregnant.
The good news is that in Australia, around the world, around half of babies are born with a normal weight, but that is expected to decrease in coming years.
So it’s good to have them down at around 350, but it’s also very important to remember that it’s an assumption that these babies have, said professor Cairs of the University Health Network.
What is the best way to manage this demand, and how can we provide the best possible care for the patients, he asked.
